Signal City Archive Desk · a rebuild of Joseph Weizenbaum's DOCTOR script · back to the desk

ELIZA does not understand you. She finds a keyword in what you type, picks a rule, and hands your own words back as a question. That's all. Weizenbaum built her in 1966 to show how shallow this kind of exchange is, then watched people confide in her anyway. If you feel heard, that feeling is yours. It's worth noticing.

This is a rebuild in JavaScript, following the rules Weizenbaum published in his 1966 paper. It is not his original MAD-SLIP code. That code was found in the MIT archives in 2021 and ran again on an emulated IBM 7094 in December 2024: ELIZA Reanimated. Hear the episode: History No. 2, The First Conversation. Nothing you type leaves this page.
